Few images in Buddhist art are as widely revered as Buddha Shakyamuni, and few are as carefully prescribed. This handmade thangka from Kathmandu follows the classical Tibetan rules for depicting him. You get a golden-bodied teacher seated on a lotus, a luminous rainbow aureole, and two devoted monks at his side. It is a painting meant to be lived with, whether on a shrine wall or above a meditation cushion.
Where This Thangka Belongs
- Home shrine or altar: The traditional focus for offerings and prayer
- Meditation or yoga room: A calming visual anchor for stillness
- Living room or study: Bold color and meaningful subject matter in one piece
- Gift for a milestone: Suited to Buddhist ordinations, house blessings or birthdays
- Collection: A foundational piece for anyone building a Himalayan art collection
Hang it on a dry interior wall out of direct sunlight, and keep it away from smoke, humidity, and heavy handling. By custom, it is displayed higher than the head, in a tidy and respectful place.
