A hand-painted thangka of Namgyalma, known in Sanskrit as Ushnishavijaya. She is one of the three deities of long life in Tibetan Buddhism, along with White Tara and Amitayus. Practitioners turn to ger or long life, purification of negative karma, and protection. This thangka shows her in her classic form, with a serene white body and multiple arms.
In this Namgyalma Thangka
- Three faces: the central face is white and peaceful. The yellow and blue side faces are often explained as the enriching and powerful aspect of her activity.
- In one hand she holds a seated Amitabha Buddha, linking her to the Buddha of boundless life and light.
- Vajra, an arrow, and a bow in her hands stand for indestructible wisdom and the power to cut through obstacles.
- Vase in her lap: The vase is traditionally associated with the nectar of immortality.
- Crown, jewels, and brocade robes: The fine gold line work and floral patterns on her garments reflect the care of traditional thangka painting.
Namgyalma is seated on a multi-pleated orange-gold lotus above a rocky terrace. Misty mountains, a waterfall, blossoms, and soft clouds surround her under a glowing halo. The warm gold palette gives the painting a calm, luminous presence.
Each one of our thangka is hand-painted in Boudha, Kathmandu, Nepal, following the iconographic proportions of the tradition. Buddha's Art of Healing has worked in the Tibetan thangka art since 1976.
