In this Chenrezig mantra mandala, Chenrezig (Bodhisattva of compassion) appears in his four-armed form. His two inner hands meet at his heart around a blue wish-fulfilling jewel, the vow to free all beings from suffering. His upper hands hold a crystal mala and a white lotus, one counting prayers and the other showing a mind unstained by the world.
Around him, the six-syllable mantra Om Mani Padme Hum runs in rings of hand-lettered Tibetan script. It is the best-known mantra in the Tibetan world, and here it is written around its own deity, so the figure and the sound he is known for appear together.
The Mandala at a Glance
- Center: four-armed Chenrezig with a pale, serene complexion, seated in the vajra posture on a lotus throne
- Adornments: a gold-toned crown and jewelry, flowing silk scarves, and a floral-patterned lower robe in soft greens and plum
- Behind him: a pale green halo, a radiating aura, and a scrolling golden arch
- Setting: blossoming plants on one side, a rocky mountain on the other, and drifting clouds across warm ground
- Mantra rings: concentric bands of Tibetan script in white, blue, red, and black
- Corners: four endless knots with cloud scrollwork, each in its own color
- Mood: tender and meditative, with a calm, natural palette
