Guru Rinpoche Refuge Thangka | Hand-Painted Tibetan Buddhist Painting

A Refuge Field Painted from Sky to Lake. This Guru Rinpoche refuge thangka is built around a single tree whose canopy holds the objects of refuge. At the center, Guru Rinpoche sits on a lotus with his consort. He wears a lotus hat, holds a skull cup, and sits inside a halo of gold and flowers. Peonies and vines fill the background behind him.

• Sky level: A blue Buddha sits at the very top of the tree, with a column of seated teachers beneath him. Pairs of celestial figures play instruments and carry banners on the clouds. Offerings float in the corners.
• Teachers on the clouds: Two cloud banks to the left and right hold groups of seated masters in red and orange robes, with a few figures in other dress.
• Deities and sangha: The left arch shows a group of peaceful deities in different colors. The right arch shows rows of monks, each holding a staff and an alms bowl.
• Buddhas and attendants: Three Buddhas sit beneath the central figure. Standing figures on either side of the lotus throne complete the group.
• Protectors: A band of dark, multi-armed protectors fills the lower canopy, each surrounded by flames. Some ride animals.
• Lake, animals, and devotees: The trunk rises from a lotus lake. Around it are tigers, deer, birds, a peacock, horses, and other animals. A line of devotees raise folded hands and make offerings at the bottom.

The painting uses a strong blue sky shaded down into a green meadow, with white and dark clouds layered under each group of figures. Faces, jewelry, and brocade patterns are drawn in fine detail, and the flame borders around the protectors stand out against the cool tones. A red border frames the piece.
