Some thangkas calm the room. This one commands it. Vajrakilaya’s blazing aura, deep blue body, and fierce gaze make him one of the most powerful presences in Tibetan sacred art. For practitioners, he is a lineage deity. For collectors, he is a masterwork of detail and drama.

Vajrakilaya (Vajrakila, Dorje Phurba) is a principal practice deity, especially in the Nyingma and Sakya traditions, and is closely associated with Guru Padmasambhava. People bring his image into their space for:

  • Protection from obstacles and negative influences
  • A strong practice focus for those who work with Vajrakilaya sadhana
  • A bold, meaningful centerpiece for a shrine room, study, or collection
  • A lineage-rooted gift for a practitioner or teacher

What You'll See in This Thangka Painting

  • A deep blue body in blazing flames. The wisdom fire of the deity surrounds him in swirls of orange and gold.
  • Three faces, six arms. The central blue face is flanked by white and red faces, and his hands hold vajras and other ritual implements.
  • The phurba. The ritual dagger held at his center is his signature emblem, symbolizing the power that pins down obstacles and cuts through confusion.
  • Wings and a garuda above. Dark feathered wings frame the figure, and a garuda rises over the flames at the top of the painting.
  • Skull crown and ornaments. The crown of skulls and bone ornaments symbolizes the transformation of death and impermanence into wisdom.
  • In union with his consort. The embrace expresses the inseparable union of compassion and wisdom.
  • A lotus and sun-colored base. He stands on a vibrant lotus seat over the figures he subdues.
  • Offerings and a Himalayan landscape. Jewels, conch and tusk offerings, skull-cup offerings, rivers, cliffs, and clouds fill the lower painting and background.

Authentic Craftsmanship from Boudha, Kathmandu

Wrathful deities demand precision, from the flames to the proportions of the figure. Our thangkas are hand-painted in the traditional Tibetan Buddhist style by skilled Nepali artists in Boudha, one of the largest Buddhist communities outside Tibet. We have served collectors, practitioners, and Dharma centers since 1976. You buy directly from the source, not from a reseller.
